Pupils across Lagos showcase creativity in recycling, sustainability lessons, and hands-on projects as LAWMA invests in the next generation of environmental champions.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has successfully concluded the 2025 edition of its annual Summer School Programme, organised through the LAWMA Academy.

The three-week intensive programme, held at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa, gathered pupils from schools across Lagos to learn, innovate, and engage in sustainability-focused activities under the theme: “Saving the Planet One Step at a Time.”

The curriculum blended classroom lessons, practical workshops, and field trips, deepening participants’ understanding of waste management and environmental sustainability. Pupils created centre tables and frames from old tyres, plant vases from PET bottle covers, and ottomans from PET bottles and foam.

They also visited Mouka Limited, a mattress manufacturer, to observe waste management practices in industry. In addition, the Lekan Bakare Foundation delivered a lecture on marine life, highlighting the dangers of ocean littering and its destructive impact on ecosystems.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, commended the participants:

“Our children are the future custodians of the environment. By equipping them with the right knowledge and mindset, we are investing in a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.”

A major highlight was the fulfilment of Dr. Gbadegesin’s pledge to appoint the best-performing student as “One-Day MD.” This year, Ayedun Emmanuel Ire earned the coveted role, recognised as the outstanding student of the programme.

Other highlights included a “Cooking Without Waste” session, where pupils transformed overripe bananas into pancakes and stale bread into sweet butter bread—demonstrating practical ways to minimise food waste.

Corporate partners also lent their voices. Olajumoke Agbetanmije, Sustainability Analyst at 7Up Bottling Company, praised the Academy’s impact:

“We supported the summer school to help build a society where children take responsibility for their environment. To achieve this, we must catch them young, and with LAWMA Academy’s work, they have our support.”

Similarly, Mrs. Bola Adewumi, Head of LAWMA Academy, encouraged participants to act as waste management ambassadors in their schools and communities.

The event also saw pupils receive awards across categories of outstanding performance.

Now in its fifth year, the Summer School Programme stands as a milestone in LAWMA’s commitment to environmental education, equipping young people with the tools to drive positive change in their communities.

Also present at the ceremony were Executive Director, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, and other members of LAWMA management.
