Gov Otti Commissions Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, Urges Protection of Public Infrastructure
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has commissioned the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, describing the project as a significant milestone in the state’s drive to build a modern, safe and sustainable transport system.
The newly completed multimodal transport hub is designed to accommodate over 340 buses simultaneously and is integrated into the state’s expanding electric bus network.
Governor Otti disclosed that 20 electric buses are already operational, with additional units expected in the coming weeks as part of efforts to improve public transportation across the state.
The facility was named after Professor Nnenna Nnennaya-Oti, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer during the 2023 Abia governorship election. Otti commended her courage, integrity and patriotism throughout the electoral process.
According to the governor, the honour extends beyond one individual and serves as recognition for electoral officials, security personnel, party agents and citizens who stood firm against intimidation and defended democratic values.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in an address titled “Raising the Bar,” Otti stated that Abia had moved beyond the era of limited aspirations and would no longer accept constraints on its development potential.
He commended Planet Projects Limited for the successful delivery of the terminal and also praised the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, the Senior Special Assistant on Transport, Dr Obioma Nwaogbe, and their team for their commitment to the project.
The governor urged residents and members of the host community to take ownership of the facility by maintaining cleanliness and protecting it from vandalism.
He also called on Abians to pay their taxes promptly, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved through collective responsibility and active citizen participation.
