Sanwo-Olu Rewards Lagos Athletes for Historic Victory at 2025 National Youth Games

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has rewarded the victorious Team Lagos contingent for their historic triumph at the 2025 National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, where Lagos topped the medal table for the first time in the history of the under-15 competition.

Team Lagos emerged champions of the 9th National Youth Games, dethroning host Delta State with an impressive total of 110 medals — including 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze.

At a reception held in honour of the athletes, coaches, and officials at the Lagos State House, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the youngsters for their exceptional performance. He commended the Lagos State Sports Commission, led by Director-General Lekan Fatodu, for the historic achievement.

“Lagos will continue to support our young athletes to reach their full potential,” the Governor said, charging the youngsters to stay focused while combining sports with education.

Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that the young athletes will soon compete at top levels in both national and international competitions. He also pledged that the state would continue to provide modern sports facilities and opportunities for youth development.

The highlight of the state reception was the announcement of cash rewards for athletes, coaches, and officials:

  • 🥇 Gold medallists (41 individuals) — ₦500,000 each
  • 🥇 Gold (team of two) — ₦500,000 per team
  • 🥇 Gold (team events) — ₦1,000,000 per team
  • 🥈 Silver medallists (22 individuals) — ₦300,000 each
  • 🥈 Silver (team of two) — ₦300,000 per team
  • 🥈 Silver (team events) — ₦700,000 per team
  • 🥉 Bronze medallists (19 individuals) — ₦250,000 each
  • 🥉 Bronze (team of two) — ₦250,000 per team
  • 🥉 Bronze (team events) — ₦500,000 per team
  • 🎽 Non-medallists — ₦100,000 each
  • 🧑‍🏫 Coaches (61 total) — ₦300,000 each
  • 🏛 Lagos State Sports Commission — ₦25 million appreciation grant

The Governor’s unprecedented gesture, he noted, reflects the State Government’s commitment to youth development, sports excellence, and future leadership building.

Director-General Lekan Fatodu described the event as more than a reward ceremony — “a lifetime experience that inspires the boys and girls to dream bigger.”

He lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu’s unwavering belief in the potential of Lagos youth and his consistent investment in sports infrastructure and human development.

Among those present were Hon. Abiodun Orekoya, Chairman, House Committee on Youth, Sports and Social Development; Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the State Government; Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development; Hon. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education; Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye, Senior Special Assistant to the President, and other top government officials and corporate executives.
