WAEC Prepares for 2026 Digital Transition with Computer-Based Examination
Lagos State Hosts Exam Body, Reaffirms Commitment to Integrity
The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education recently hosted the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) State Committee meeting at the Secretariat, Alausa-Ikeja, as the examination body prepares for a digital transition in 2026.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, who chaired the meeting, reaffirmed the synergy between the Lagos State Government and WAEC. He also announced updates to the composition of the State Committee to align with the structure of Lagosโ education systemโnow including the six Tutor-Generals/Permanent Secretaries, the Permanent Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), and the Parents Forum (PF).
Alli-Balogun emphasized the Stateโs zero tolerance for examination malpractice, urging that any contraventions and sanctions be communicated directly to schools through the Ministry.
In his remarks, the Zonal Coordinator of WAEC, Mr. Rafiu Atoyebi, presented a performance analysis of each State and subject-by-subject results in Nigeria. He also unveiled the Councilโs plan to introduce a Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format for the May/June 2026 WASSCE, with a hybrid pilot programme scheduled for selected subjects at JAMB-accredited centres.
Atoyebi addressed stakeholdersโ concerns regarding technical readiness, assuring that all registered candidatesโincluding those in rural areasโwill participate seamlessly, whether onshore or offshore. He affirmed that CBT is the future of examinations, promising improved credibility, efficiency, and reduced malpractice.
According to him, the transition will eliminate logistical bottlenecks, modernize assessment processes, and integrate technology across registration, testing, result processing, and verification.
The State delegation, led by the Commissioner, included Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry; Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, Permanent Secretary, TESCOM; Dr. Olufunke Oyetola, Mr. Segun Osinaike, Mr. Sanni Layemo, and Mrs. Mojisola Yussuf, Tutor-Generals/Permanent Secretaries for Education Districts I, II, III, and VI respectively.
