History was made on Saturday, October 25, as the Association of Mass Communication Students (AASMACS) Class of 2000 held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and inauguration of new executives. The event, which took place in Owerri, marked a symbolic transition of leadership from the outgoing president, Reverend Canon Ndubuisi Rowland Iheagwam (JP), to Mr. Sunny Victor Odoh (Joviq).

In his heartfelt valedictory address, Rev. Canon Iheagwam expressed deep gratitude to God and to members of the association for their steadfastness and unity during his tenure.

“It is with great joy that I stand before you to deliver this speech,” he began. “First, I want to sincerely thank God for His faithfulness, the gift of life, and His mercies — especially that AASMACS is still alive to this day.”

The outgoing president lauded his executives for their unwavering support and harmony, emphasizing that not one among them posed a challenge to the administration. He also extended appreciation to all members and the electoral committee, led by Nze Tunde Chinazo Ilechukwu and Dr. Queen Ifeoma Osuala, for conducting a credible election.

Reflecting on his administration’s milestones, Rev. Canon Iheagwam listed key achievements, including:

Opening a functional bank account for the association

Conducting a free and fair election in line with the constitution

Fostering peace among members

Launching an official Facebook Page — a digital asset for the association

Independently financing the CAC registration of AASMACS 2000

Introducing the “AASMACS Hot Seat” Saturday program — the first of its kind

Clearing almost all backlog of payments for bereaved members

Offering words of counsel to his successor and the incoming team, he urged introspection, unity, and innovation:

“The president and his executives should look inward to find where we failed and excel beyond us. Work for unity, sieve your advisers carefully, review the constitution, and make our Facebook page a source of value and income.”

In a gesture of humility and reconciliation, he added:
“I appeal and plead for forgiveness if I offended anyone during my administration, and I have also forgiven all who offended me. May you leave the association better than you met it.”

A New Dawn of Leadership

In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated President, Mr. Sunny Victor Odoh (Joviq) expressed profound gratitude for the trust placed in him and his team.

“With a heart full of gratitude and humility, I stand before you to accept the responsibility and honour you have bestowed upon me as the President of this great association,” he began. “Our election is not a reward but a call to stewardship — one that demands accountability, inclusiveness, and innovation.”

He acknowledged the challenges the association had faced since its formal establishment in 2018 but reaffirmed his commitment to ushering in a new era marked by renewed vision, collaboration, and deliberate growth.

“This new administration is poised to turn challenges into opportunities,” Odoh said. “We will provide transparent, all-inclusive leadership that promotes our shared goals.”
