President Barrow Receives Highest Honour of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau
The President of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow, has been awarded the Amílcar Cabral Medal, the highest state honour of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, in recognition of his pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
The decoration was conferred by Guinea-Bissau’s President, General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during President Barrow’s first official state visit to Bissau. President Embaló praised the strong bond and shared history between the two countries, noting that their ties transcend colonial boundaries.
Accepting the honour, President Barrow described the medal as a powerful symbol of the enduring spirit of freedom, Pan-Africanism, and revolutionary sacrifice embodied by Amílcar Cabral. He dedicated the award to the people of The Gambia, “who remain committed to the ideals of unity and friendship of the people of Bissau.”
As part of the ceremony, the Mayor of Bissau, Mr. José Medina Lobato, presented President Barrow with the key to the city, further cementing the significance of the historic occasion.
President Barrow also paid tribute to Guinea-Bissau’s revolutionary leaders, laying a floral wreath at the Amira Fortress on the tombs of the late Amílcar Cabral and former President General João Bernardo Vieira.
