The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has secured community service sentences for two bakery workers accused of stealing from their employer, in a move that reflects the State’s commitment to decongesting correctional facilities and advancing restorative justice.

The workers were alleged to have stolen five loaves of bread, with their employer initially insisting on prosecution. However, under the Ministry’s innovative sifting process at the Magistrate Courts, a District Prosecutor referred the matter to the Restorative Justice Centre (RJC) instead of filing charges.

At the RJC, mediation was conducted between the employer and the accused workers. Both parties reached an agreement, and the offenders were sentenced to two weeks of community service, which commenced immediately.

The Ministry noted that the case underscores the effectiveness of restorative justice in addressing minor offences, promoting accountability, and fostering reconciliation. It also demonstrates the State’s proactive efforts to use alternatives to custodial sentencing as part of its broader justice reform agenda.
