In furtherance of its recently held inauguration ceremony in November, the Ministry of Information Toastmasters Club held its first regular club meeting, themed: “A New Beginning” on Tuesday where table topics and ice breaker speeches were delivered.

An ice-breaker is a short speech a member gives in a Toastmasters meeting to introduce themselves, usually within an allocated 4 to 6-minute period to “break the ice” and make guests comfortable.

In his opening remarks at the meeting, Charter President and Director Strategy Centre, Ministry of Information and Strategy, TM Kayode Oyekanmi welcomed Charter members, intending members and guests to the meeting, noting that the occasion is designed to kick-start a new beginning for the Ministry’s club. “This will also enhance our capacity, effectiveness and public speaking abilities as professionals,” he said.

Speaking further, Oyekanmi thanked the Area Director, TM Funmi Omotoso, for her unwavering support in guiding the club on the right path since its inception.
Also speaking, the General Evaluator and Past President of Merit Toastmasters Club, DTM Kuby Uyanga explained that the essence of the meeting was to improve communication skills and receive evaluation, stressing that “whatever gets measured can be improved upon”

The Word of the Day at the meeting was “Ebullient”- an Adjective, which means buÉ“bling with enthusiasm, full of energy, with synonyms including exuberant, cheerful, highly spirited, and vivacious.

High point of the meeting was the delivery of ice-breaker speeches by two charter members of the Ministry of Information Toastmasters Club; TM Bukola Bakare – an Assistant Chief Public Affairs Officer who delivered a speech titled: “Birth and Powerful Affirmations” where she drew the nexus between birth and how valuable lessons from her parents shaped her personal and career growth, emphasising how she wears “Confidence like an Armour, Honesty like a Cloak and Respect like a Shield”.

On his part, TM Babatunde Omisore, also an Assistant Chief Public Affairs Officer, spoke on “When opportunities are not opportunities,” where he urged everyone to keep looking out for opportunities and harness them accordingly. He added that “Opportunities are often missed because they are dressed like work.”

Both Speakers incorporated the word of the day (Ebullient) in their presentations to the admiration of participants and guests, and were subsequently evaluated by the Area Director, who also served as Language Evaluator, TM Funmi Omotoso and TM Ada Biyom, respectively.
