Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has urged members of the 2026 Batch A of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed to the state to embrace discipline, patriotism, and unwavering commitment throughout their one-year mandatory service.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area, Governor Otti described national service as “a seed” which, when nurtured with discipline, empathy, and dedication, grows into a life of purpose and leadership.

He encouraged the corps members to see the service year not merely as a civic obligation, but as a rare opportunity to shape their future and contribute meaningfully to national development.

“Wherever you are posted—whether to a school, hospital, court, or office—your task remains the same: serve with excellence, and the rewards will follow,” the governor said.

Governor Otti reaffirmed that Abia State is committed to meritocracy and rewards excellence irrespective of state of origin. He cited the example of the current Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, an indigene of Edo State, who served in Abia during his NYSC year.

“He distinguished himself as the best corps member of his batch and today leads the Abia State Civil Service. That is the kind of story we are proud to tell, and one we hope many of you will replicate,” Otti noted.

The governor also commended the Abia State NYSC leadership, led by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Gladys Adama, for their dedication to the welfare and seamless integration of corps members. He assured them of the state government’s continued support, stressing that investing in young people is an investment in the future of the state.

Reflecting on his own journey, Governor Otti recalled that he completed his NYSC programme in Efon Alaaye, now in Ekiti State, an experience he said profoundly shaped his worldview and career.

“That journey laid the foundation for the path that eventually brought me to the office I now occupy. If my service year could lead me here, I believe these young Nigerians can go even further,” he said.

He concluded by urging the corps members to serve with passion, dream boldly, and make the most of what he described as a defining chapter in their lives.
