Mali has been thrust into fresh uncertainty following unconfirmed reports that its Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in a wave of coordinated attacks targeting key military installations.

According to multiple sources, the violence began with a major assault on the minister’s residence in Kati, a heavily fortified garrison town near Bamako. The attack reportedly involved a suicide vehicle bombing, signalling a bold and symbolic strike at the core of the country’s military leadership.

The unrest quickly spread beyond Kati. Armed groups are said to have launched near-simultaneous offensives across several strategic locations, including Bamako, as well as the northern cities of Gao and Kidal, and the central town of Sévaré. Witnesses reported heavy gunfire and multiple explosions, pointing to a coordinated and sustained campaign rather than isolated incidents.

The attackers are believed to include militants linked to Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups, alongside Tuareg rebel elements—an indication of the increasingly complex and fragmented security landscape in the Sahel nation.

General Camara has remained a pivotal figure in Mali’s military-led administration since the coups of 2020 and 2021. If confirmed, his death would mark a significant blow to the country’s armed forces and could reshape the balance of power within the transitional government, raising fresh concerns over stability in an already volatile region.
