In a move to curb the menace of indiscriminate waste dumping along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative (CBI), led by its Chairperson, Mrs. Tosin Whingan, wife of Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, has launched a large-scale environmental intervention and advocacy campaign in partnership with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and other environmental stakeholders.

The exercise, held along the Morogbo–Agbara corridor, is part of CBI’s ongoing efforts to restore cleanliness, order, and environmental discipline along the ever-busy expressway. The group decried the growing trend of refuse dumping on road medians — a practice that defaces the environment and endangers public health.

Addressing volunteers and residents during the campaign, Mrs. Whingan emphasized that the initiative was driven by the need to protect the environment and foster civic responsibility among community members.

“We cannot continue to watch our environment deteriorate because of poor waste habits,” she said. “This road is not just a passageway; it is a reflection of our community’s image. Everyone must take responsibility for keeping it clean.”

The intervention combined hands-on clean-up activities with strong advocacy for a circular economy — promoting waste sorting, recycling, and waste-to-wealth opportunities for local communities. Traders, transport operators, market leaders, and residents joined CBI volunteers and LAWMA personnel in clearing waste piles, sweeping medians, and beautifying the corridor.

Participants were sensitized on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping, including blocked drainage channels, flooding, and disease outbreaks. Environmental experts at the event underscored the economic and health benefits of sustainable waste management practices, urging residents to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles.

LAWMA officials at the exercise commended the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative for mobilizing citizens toward environmental stewardship, pledging continued collaboration to ensure regular monitoring and enforcement along the expressway.

Beyond the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, CBI has maintained an active presence across all three local councils in the Badagry Division — Badagry Local Government, Olorunda LCDA, and Badagry West LCDA — where it has organized multiple clean-up drives, sensitization campaigns, and community outreach programmes.

Reiterating the organization’s long-term vision, Mrs. Whingan described the Clean-Up Badagry Initiative as a movement to inspire a lasting culture of environmental responsibility.

“Our mission is simple — to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Badagry, one community at a time,” she stated. “Through partnership, education, and action, we can transform our environment and preserve it for future generations.”

As the campaign gathers momentum, environmental stakeholders believe that sustained advocacy, community participation, and government collaboration remain critical to eradicating illegal dumping and achieving a cleaner, healthier Lagos–Badagry corridor.
