Troops of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army have foiled an illegal petroleum bunkering operation and arrested 14 suspected oil thieves in the Lekki Free Zone area of Lagos State.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of April 16, 2026, followed credible intelligence on illicit activities around the general area near the Dangote Refinery.

According to military sources, the troops launched a swift and coordinated raid at about 1:30 a.m., apprehending the suspects while they were actively siphoning petroleum products.

Investigations at the scene revealed that the suspects had illegally connected a long pipeline from the high sea to a tanker concealed within a bush. Using a generator-powered pumping machine, they were transferring petroleum products directly into the vehicle.

On sighting the approaching troops, the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly subdued and arrested.
Items recovered during the operation include a petroleum tanker truck loaded with siphoned products, a Lexus Highlander SUV with registration number APP 67 JQ (Lagos), a Ford Hilux vehicle with registration number BY 117 FST (Lagos), a pumping machine, a 40-horsepower boat engine, as well as a large quantity of industrial hosepipes and other bunkering equipment.

All suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face further investigation and possible prosecution, as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle illegal bunkering networks in the region.
