The Nigerian Army has taken a significant step toward strengthening its operational capacity and expanding its presence in the South-East with the groundbreaking ceremony for a strategic 120-bed Army Medical Centre at the Depot Nigerian Army, Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.

The foundation-laying ceremony, held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, was performed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, alongside the governors of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu states.

The project marks a deliberate expansion of the Nigerian Army’s force support infrastructure, aimed at enhancing operational readiness and reinforcing security across the South-East geopolitical zone.

According to a statement by Colonel Appolonia Anele, the proposed medical facility is designed to serve as a critical healthcare hub for military personnel, particularly troops undergoing training at the Depot. It is also expected to provide enhanced medical support for ongoing and future military operations in the region, thereby strengthening the Army’s ability to maintain a fit, resilient, and combat-ready force.

In line with the Nigerian Army’s people-centred approach, the medical centre has been strategically located outside the Depot to ensure access for members of surrounding communities. This, the Army said, will improve access to quality healthcare while deepening civil-military relations.

The state-of-the-art facility will offer a broad range of specialised medical services, including emergency care, surgical theatres, intensive care units, diagnostic laboratories, outpatient and specialist clinics, as well as dedicated wards for men, women, and children.

Notably, the centre will also house a psychiatric unit dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other operational stress-related conditions, reflecting the Army’s growing emphasis on the mental health and overall well-being of its personnel.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff and the South-East governors described the project as a strategic investment that extends beyond physical infrastructure. They noted that it represents a long-term commitment to strengthening national security, expanding the Army’s operational support systems, and promoting regional stability through collaboration.

They further stressed that the initiative would not only improve military healthcare delivery but also stimulate socio-economic development, expand access to quality medical services for host communities, and strengthen the relationship between the Nigerian Army and the civilian population.

The Army noted that the project underscores its continued expansion in both capability and presence, positioning it to respond more effectively to emerging security challenges while contributing to national development and sustainable peace in the South-East.
