NAF Trains Children of Personnel in Music Skills to Boost Welfare and Creativity
In line with his command philosophy of “Welfare-Driven Leadership”, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has facilitated a groundbreaking welfare initiative for the families of personnel. From 4 – 30 August 2025, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through its Directorate of Music, successfully conducted free holiday training on musical instruments for children of personnel across various music squadrons nationwide.
The intensive four-week programme, designed for wards aged 6 – 17 years, provided hands-on training in handling and performing different musical instruments. This initiative not only reflects the CAS’s strong commitment to personnel welfare but also highlights his holistic approach to family wellbeing and capacity development within the Air Force community.
Experts note that music education fosters a wide range of developmental benefits, including:
- Enhanced cognitive abilities such as memory and executive function.
- Improved emotional regulation and self-expression.
- Better motor coordination and teamwork.
- Stronger social interaction skills.

By productively engaging young dependants during the holiday period, the programme promoted creativity, discipline, and teamwork—qualities that will positively shape their personal growth and contribute to national development.
Beyond its impact on the children, the initiative has also boosted morale among personnel, reassuring them that the welfare of their families remains a top priority for the Service. For the CAS, strengthening the social fabric of the Air Force community is directly tied to operational effectiveness.
“When families are supported, personnel are more motivated, and a motivated force is better positioned to project airpower for the protection of lives and property,” a NAF official noted.
This music training programme is therefore more than a welfare activity—it is an investment in the future of NAF families, ensuring resilient dependants, motivated personnel, and ultimately, a stronger national defence system.
