Lagos State Government Trains BRT Drivers on Road Safety Techniques
The Lagos State Safety Commission (LSC), in partnership with Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL), has organised a comprehensive training programme for BRT Captains aimed at improving road safety practices, emergency response, and accident prevention.
The training, themed “The Mind Behind the Wheel”, was held at the LBSL headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos.
Declaring the programme open, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, highlighted that both global reports and local statistics reveal that over 75% of road accidents are caused by human error. He stressed that continuous training, awareness, and attitudinal change remain key to reducing crashes and saving lives.
“Every driver here must consider themselves fortunate to participate in this training,” Mojola said. “The skills and knowledge you acquire will not only make you safer behind the wheel but also protect millions of Lagosians who depend on the BRT system daily. This aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly the transportation and traffic management pillar.”

Mojola further disclosed that over five million people worldwide have benefited from similar training programmes, with positive feedback from both drivers and commuters.
Also speaking, the Managing Director/CEO of LBSL, Mr. Idowu Oguntona, described the initiative as proof of government’s commitment to safe mobility in a megacity like Lagos. He noted that the BRT system has already moved more than 60 million passengers across various routes, while maintaining an impressive safety record.
“Transportation is the lifeblood of Lagos,” Oguntona said. “Our drivers carry the responsibility of millions of lives daily, so upgrading their capacity through training is non-negotiable. This programme equips them with discipline, vigilance, and professionalism.”
In a goodwill message, the representative of the Managing Director of LAMATA, Mr. Poju Fowokan, commended the initiative and urged drivers to take personal responsibility for road safety. He praised LBSL as a model of efficient urban transport and urged the agency to sustain its high standards.

The training sessions, facilitated by MTC Consult, featured expert-led modules on accident causation, driver psychology, stress management, first aid, and modern traffic safety strategies. Participants also engaged in practical case studies and real-life traffic simulations.
At the end of the programme, drivers expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for investing in their professional development and pledged to apply the new skills in their daily operations to ensure safer roads for all Lagosians.
