High expectations as marking of WASSCE 2025 begins

Following the conclusion of the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has commenced the marking of scripts of 1.9 million candidates who wrote the exam.

It was also gathered that Lagos State has the highest marking venues for the school examination.
The marking of the answer scripts and early release of the results would brighten the chances of candidates seeking admissions into the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Dr. Amos Dangut, had on Thursday, April 17th, 2025, disclosed that the school exam would take place between Thursday, April 24 and Friday, June 20, 2025, for eight weeks and one day.
Dangut disclosed that 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 secondary schools presented candidates for the school exam.
He said 979,228 candidates are males, representing 49.63%, while 994,025 candidates are females, which is 50.37% of the total candidature.
“The statistics show a further increase in the number of females and males, respectively, compared to last year. However, on the roll, the candidacy for this year increased by 158,627 candidates, they would be examined in 74 subjects, made up of 196 papers.”
Dangut explained that about 26,000 practising senior secondary school teachers, nominated by various ministries of education, participated in the examination as supervisors.
On the release of results, he said: “Our usual practice has been, the results of candidates sitting the examination will be released 45 days after the conduct of the last paper, while awarded certificates will be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days after the release of results.”
