Enugu Airport Concession to Boost Trade, Tourism in South-East
The concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, has been hailed as a significant milestone in efforts to stimulate economic growth and modernise infrastructure in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) described the agreement as a major step in the Federal Government’s drive to upgrade critical national assets through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
Speaking on the development, the Director-General of the ICRC, Dr. Jobson Ewalefoh, said the concession agreement—signed by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)—underscores Nigeria’s commitment to attracting private-sector investment and improving service delivery in the aviation sector.
“This concession is more than a contract; it is a blueprint for economic growth, linking the South-East to domestic and international markets, while boosting trade, tourism, and investment,” Ewalefoh said.
He noted that the ICRC ensured the project complied with all regulatory requirements, including comprehensive due diligence, certification of the business case, approval by the Federal Executive Council, and legal vetting by the Ministry of Justice.
According to Ewalefoh, these safeguards are designed to guarantee value for money, protect public interest, and enhance investor confidence, positioning the Enugu airport concession as a catalyst for regional economic transformation.
