The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday commenced a crucial two-day Stakeholders’ Policy Review Workshop in Lagos to deliberate on the review of the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) 2000.

The workshop serves as a strategic platform for stakeholders to assess the progress made in the telecommunications sector over the past two decades, celebrate key milestones, and chart new pathways for Nigeria’s evolving digital economy.

Speaking at the opening session, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Aminu Maida, stated that the communications sector has transformed from a standalone industry into a critical enabler of economic growth and national development.

He stressed the need for stronger and forward-looking policy frameworks to effectively regulate emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Satellite Broadband, the Internet of Things (IoT), Critical National Information Infrastructure, Digital Sovereignty, Network Resilience, Sustainable Innovation, and Quality of Experience (QoE).

Citing data from the GSMA, Maida disclosed that the strategic digitisation of sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and trade could contribute an additional two per cent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), create about two million jobs, and generate approximately N1.6 trillion in tax revenue.

He further noted that modern telecommunications regulation must increasingly address emerging concerns such as cybersecurity, data governance, digital financing, and online safety.

The workshop’s technical panel sessions are focusing on key areas including the evolution and legacy of the NTP 2000, strategies for bridging the digital divide through collaborative implementation, and building a resilient digital future that balances innovation, security, and trust.
Other discussions include international telecommunications policy models, global best practices, and stakeholder feedback on the Commission’s published policy proposals.

According to the Commission, the ongoing review process is aimed at fostering a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready digital economy that will benefit all Nigerians.
