IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Officer Over Effurun Shooting
The Nigeria Police Force has announced decisive disciplinary action following the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State.Acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, all officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and redeployed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), alongside other internal review mechanisms, concluded its investigation and found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other established regulations governing the use of firearms.
The committee determined that his actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear breach of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.Following these findings, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.
The Inspector-General has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in accordance with due process.Upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers are to be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.
Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that no officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.
He warned that any personnel found violating this principle would face the full weight of both disciplinary and legal consequences.
The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that justice would be pursued diligently and transparently.
The Police further urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
