Troops Dismantle Kidnap Syndicate in Imo, Recover Ransom Cash, Vehicle
Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade operating under Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have dismantled a kidnapping syndicate in Imo State, arresting a suspect and recovering suspected ransom proceeds as well as a vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
The intelligence-led operation, conducted on July 17, 2026, was carried out in Obinwanne Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 34 Artillery Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, troops launched a cordon-and-search operation following credible intelligence on the activities of the criminal gang.
During the operation, security personnel recovered a bag allegedly used to transport ransom payments. The bag was found abandoned in a nearby bush, suggesting that the ransom had already been shared among members of the syndicate.
The statement added that further exploitation of intelligence led to the arrest of a suspect at a residential building in the area. A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of a black Lexus saloon car believed to have been used during the kidnapping operation, several mobile phones, identity documents, and ₦298,200 in cash suspected to be part of the ransom.
The rescued victim later identified the arrested suspect as one of those involved in the abduction.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspect allegedly facilitated the crime by providing his vehicle to the syndicate’s principal actor and subsequently received a share of the ransom proceeds.
Lieutenant Colonel Ayeni said the suspect and all recovered exhibits have been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and efforts to apprehend other members of the gang, including the alleged kingpin who remains at large.
He noted that the successful operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and the sustained collaboration among security agencies in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes across the South-East.
