The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a bold step towards sustainability and innovation by integrating Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology into its transport fleet. Through its subsidiary, Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL), the NAF has partnered with the Presidential Initiative on CNG in a landmark collaboration that positions the Service as a driver of green defence solutions.

The partnership was formally launched with the handover of three CNG-powered buses to the NAF. In addition, plans are underway to convert 30 NAF vehicles from petrol and diesel to CNG, a move expected to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, cut operational costs, and support Nigeria’s transition to clean energy. To sustain the programme, 30 NAF personnel will undergo specialised training in CNG vehicle conversion, maintenance, and repairs.

Looking beyond military needs, AETSL will also establish CNG conversion and refuelling centres in communities hosting NAF bases — a step that will extend the benefits of cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy to ordinary Nigerians.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, described the partnership as a strategic milestone:
“This partnership optimises our resources, enhances adaptability, and aligns our support services with Nigeria’s national priorities. It is another demonstration of the Nigerian Air Force’s ability to embrace innovation and drive sustainability in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative energy agenda.”

Executive Chairman/CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Barr. Ismael Ahmed, praised the NAF for keying into the transition:
“This reform delivers efficiency, cost savings, and clean energy gains. We commend the NAF not just for innovation, but also for its unwavering role in safeguarding lives and property.”

Also speaking, AVM Nnaemeka Ilo, Managing Director of AETSL, described the initiative as a “clear demonstration of institutional readiness and forward thinking.” He reaffirmed AETSL’s commitment to expanding the partnership — from training technicians to exploring broader CNG product distribution.

This development underscores the NAF’s dual commitment: enhancing operational efficiency while contributing to Nigeria’s long-term energy security and environmental sustainability.
