Malami Challenges EFCC, Alleges Bias by Chairman
By Brown Chimezie,
Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has demanded that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) either release him or formally arraign him within 24 hours, following his ongoing engagement with the anti-graft agency over alleged corruption charges.
In a strongly worded response, Malami called for the transfer of his case from the EFCC to another government enforcement agency, citing what he described as clear bias and personal vendetta by the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.
Malami alleged that Olukoyede’s actions are influenced by the Justice Ayo Salami Report, which he claimed indicted the current EFCC Chairman during his tenure as Secretary of the Commission at the time the report was issued. According to the former AGF, this background compromises the chairman’s impartiality and undermines the credibility of the investigation against him.
Beyond the legal arguments, the episode underscores a striking irony of power and time. Malami, once one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s justice system—who wielded the authority to appoint or remove an EFCC Chairman—now finds himself petitioning the same institution he once presided over.
It is a reminder that power is fleeting, and the institutions that once bend to authority often endure long after influence has faded.
