The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Tuesday hosted a crucial stakeholders’ meeting aimed at advancing sustainable waste management practices and fostering collaboration among key community actors in Surulere.

Held at the LAWMA headquarters, Ijora-Olopa, the session brought together Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs), Chairmen of Surulere LCDAs, Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators, and other relevant stakeholders to address sanitation challenges, review progress, and encourage active participation in environmental renewal.

In his welcome address, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, represented by Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, Executive Director of Finance, commended the dedication of all participants and applauded Hon. Desmond Olushola Elliot, Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency 1, for his leadership through the ongoing “Refuse to Flower” initiative.

“The environment belongs to everyone. We must collaborate and ensure we create a livable environment,” Mr. Adebiyi said. “This initiative and today’s meeting show what can be achieved when government agencies, community leaders, and residents work together. Sustainable waste management requires shared responsibility.”

In his remarks, Hon. Desmond Elliot expressed appreciation to LAWMA’s management, CDC and CDA leaders, and PSP operators for their consistent cooperation. He emphasized that community involvement remains the driving force behind the “Refuse to Flower” initiative, which has already transformed numerous black spots into green spaces across Surulere.

“If we do not start to take the bull by the horns and make deliberate decisions to change our environment, we will continue to live with the same problems,” Elliot warned. “Surulere is the heart of Lagos, and everyone has a role to play in keeping it clean, safe, and beautiful.”

The forum also served as a platform to highlight key concerns affecting waste management — from service delivery gaps to compliance and enforcement. Participants explored ways to strengthen partnerships among communities, PSP operators, and LAWMA to ensure consistent waste evacuation and maintenance of public spaces.

This engagement underscores the Lagos State Government’s continued commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos — one that reflects the collective responsibility of citizens and institutions alike.
