Ojo, Lagos — September 25, 2025 — Tension gripped the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo on Thursday as the Lagos State Government demolished several buildings deemed illegal and unsafe, leaving traders devastated and counting heavy losses.

According to reports, at least 19 buildings, each valued at several million Naira, were pulled down during the exercise at the New Mandilas Plaza within the complex. Bulldozers, escorted by armed security personnel, rolled in as shop owners scrambled to salvage what they could.

Government’s Position

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Olumide Oluyinka, and the Special Adviser on E-GIS and Planning Matters, Dr. Abiodun Babatunde Olajide, explained that the action was part of efforts to enforce physical planning laws and restore order within the sprawling commercial hub.

“All buildings within the Trade Fair Complex must present evidence of valid permits. Any development without approval will be demolished,” Oluyinka stated, stressing that the government would not tolerate unregulated or chaotic construction.

Officials also ordered that all ongoing construction works at the complex be suspended until proper documentation is secured.

The demolition sparked outrage among shop owners, many of whom claimed they had not been served prior notice. Several said their goods were still inside when bulldozers began reducing the structures to rubble.

One trader lamented:

“We don’t even know the reason for the demolition. People are just moving up and down, asking questions.”

Another suggested that the buildings may have been marked for being too close to a canal.

Heavy Security Presence

The operation was carried out under tight security, with teams from the Lagos State Task Force, Rapid Response Squad, and other tactical units cordoning off the area. Traders were denied access, while officers reportedly prevented recordings of the exercise.

By mid-day, much of the plaza had been flattened, leaving traders mourning their investments and demanding clearer communication from the authorities.
