Education District 1 shines at national sustainability challenge

Lagos State Education District I, Agege, has once again demonstrated excellence as Ifesowapo-Aboru Senior Secondary School emerged as the second-place winner in the prestigious QAPS Sustainability Challenge 2025, a national students’ innovation competition on climate change and sustainable development recently.

The QAPS Sustainability Challenge is a four-week, student-based innovation programme organised by QAPS, an organisation based in the United Kingdom, designed to equip young learners with creative skills to tackle real-world environmental problems. The initiative brought together schools across Lagos and Nigeria in a virtual summer learning experience focused on climate change, teamwork, and innovation.

In her remarks, the TG/PS, Education District I, Dr. Oyetola Olufunke Idowu congratulated the students representing Ifesowapo-Aboru Senior Secondary School, Festus Godswill, Folorunsho Marvelous, Adeuyi Adetola, John Pelumi, and Akpojevughe Sarah, for making the school proud and the District in general.

Dr. Oyetola also recognized the mentorship of their SDG Coordinator, Mr. Soji Megbowon and the keen support from their Principal, Mr. Giwa Adetoto and their Vice Principal, Mrs. Ali B.R.

The programme which lasted throughout the month of August 2025, saw the students engaged in intensive daily learning sessions, mastering four sustainability modules that strengthened their understanding of climate action and creative problem-solving.

Also as part of their final project, the team developed the “WASH Project”, an automated, contactless water filtration and fountain system that enables students to access clean drinking water hygienically, reducing the risk of contamination and promoting safe water practices in schools.

After a two-week evaluation period, Ifesowapo-Aboru Senior Secondary School was adjudged the first runner-up, distinguishing it as the only public school among the top winners competing against leading private institutions nationwide.

While recognizing this remarkable achievement, the TG/PS, Dr. Oyetola stated that the feat underscores the District’s commitment to nurturing global citizens through innovation, sustainability in education and 21st-century learning experience.

Admonishing the students to keep it up and not to relent on the good work, the TG/PS thanked the teachers for the remarkable achievement and reminded them of the passion of Mr. Governor towards education which is not to leave anybody behind.
