Army Clarifies Circumstances Surrounding Soldier’s Death in Ikorodu
The headquarters of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, has addressed a viral video circulating online regarding the tragic death of a soldier in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. While investigations are ongoing, the Division released preliminary details to provide clarity on the incident.
In a statement signed by Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, the Division confirmed that the incident occurred on 16 November 2025, at about 4:00 p.m. According to the statement, a soldier deployed for internal security duties in the Imota area of Ikorodu was attempting to calm a chaotic situation when he was attacked by a man described as mentally unstable.
“The attacker struck the soldier on the head with a heavy log, resulting in severe injuries,” the statement reads. “Other soldiers on duty immediately brought the situation under control, neutralised the attacker, and recovered the soldier’s weapon.”
The injured soldier was rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He has since been laid to rest according to Islamic rites, with his unit’s Acting Commanding Officer and other officers in attendance.
The 81 Division expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldier, acknowledging his service and sacrifice to the nation. The Division also confirmed that a formal investigation has been instituted to ascertain full details of the incident.
The Army further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies. It appealed for responsible reporting from the media while the investigation continues.
