The Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, has indicated the Ministry’s readiness to assist the Local Government Staff Housing Board in achieving an enduring partnership to increase access of Local Government personnel to home ownership opportunities.

The collaboration for affordable housing for Local Government staff will involve a review of existing regulations and laws establishing the Local Government Staff Housing Board to improve ease of access and loan amounts realistic for home ownership, renovation, and other purposes.

The revelation came during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Housing by the leadership of the Local Government Housing Board led by Chairman Mrs. Bibilomo Olusekun, alongside other officials including the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Local Government Establishment and Training.

“The Ministry is ready to work with the Board to achieve its aim within the 20% slot graciously set aside for civil servants, including local government staff, in Lagos State housing estates,” said Commissioner Akinderu-Fatai.

He further emphasized that local government staff can access these housing opportunities through two main channels: outright purchase and the Rent-to-Own scheme. The Commissioner also advised the Board to engage leadership across local councils and stakeholders in identifying affordable housing units within their respective areas.

Earlier in her remarks, Mrs. Olusekun highlighted that while the Board has over 3,000 loan beneficiaries across the 57 Local Governments and LCDAs, expanding access to the Ministry’s housing allocations would greatly enhance staff welfare and productivity.

“This initiative will improve staff commitment, ensure a more secure future for employees, and reflect government’s genuine commitment to the welfare of its workforce,” stated Mrs. Olusekun.

In his remarks, Permanent Secretary Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to a productive partnership with the Office of Local Government Establishment and Training, ensuring that the collaboration yields tangible results for the Local Government workforce.

He appreciated the delegation for their visit and assured that their requests would be duly considered within the available guidelines.
