National Youth Games: Team Lagos Dominates Swimming with 7 Gold Medals

Team Lagos made a commanding statement on the opening day of the Swimming event at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, clinching seven gold medals and one silver to top the medal table.

In the Girls’ category, Lagos swimmers showcased their strength with four gold medals in:

  • 100m Freestyle
  • 50m Butterfly
  • 50m Backstroke
  • 4×100m Medley Relay

The Boys’ category also delivered outstanding results, securing three gold and one silver medal in the:

  • 200m Individual Medley
  • 100m Backstroke
  • 4×100m Freestyle Relay (Gold)
  • 50m Freestyle (Silver)

This brought Lagos’ total swimming medal count to eight on the first day.

Beyond the pool, Lagos gymnasts added to the medal tally with one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the Boys’ Artistic Event, further boosting the team’s standing.

In football, both the Lagos male and female teams secured crucial victories over host state Delta, with scorelines of 1–0 and 2–0 respectively at the St. Patrick’s College Field, Asaba.

The momentum extended to weightlifting, where Team Lagos grabbed two silver and one bronze medal in the 55kg category, reinforcing their reputation as one of the championship favorites.

Speaking at the event, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, credited the victories to the unwavering support of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

“The impressive results we are witnessing here today are due to the support of our sports-loving Governor. Team Lagos is expected to continue its winning streak in other sports,” Fatodu said.

He praised the swimmers in particular, noting:

“We are proud of our swimmers, and we know they will represent Nigeria well. This outstanding performance is a testament to Lagos’ commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting excellence in sports.”

With a strong start across multiple disciplines, Team Lagos is firmly on track to make its mark at the 9th National Youth Games.
