World Cardiac Day; Lagos Health Districts distributes free drugs to Lagosians
The Lagos State Health Districts’ Body of Permanent Secretaries recently organised a free medical outreach to commemorate World Cardiac Day 2025, tagged “Don’t Miss a Beat”, stressing that World Cardiac Day is a new opportunity to reflect on how to best use the heart for the benefit of humanity and nature.
Ikeja Local Government Chairman, Hon. Akeem Daudu, who hosted the Permanent Secretaries of the Lagos State Health Districts I-VI, said, “Every 29th of September, we celebrate World Heart Day to raise awareness of cardiac issues and the importance of taking care of our hearts, from individuals, families, schools, community groups, and government. Therefore, we should work to make equitable heart health a priority and drive change across Lagos State,” he said.
The Body of Permanent Secretaries, Lagos State Health Districts, in their remarks, alerted Lagosians to some hidden signs of heart disease that people are unaware of, including loose grip, swelling of the lower legs, skin colour changes, sexual problems, and sleep apnea.
They explained the strategies to prevent heart disease, advising Lagosians to get regular health screening tests, manage stress, get quality sleep, maintain a healthy weight, eat a heart-healthy diet, aim for at least 30 to 60 minutes of activity daily, abstain from smoking and limit intake of alcohol.
The Permanent Secretaries present at the event included Dr. Dayo Lajide of HD I, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke of HD II, Dr. Abimbola Bowale of HD IV, Dr. Dapo Asiyanbi of HD V, Dr. Funmilayo Bankole of HD III and Dr. Abimbola Mabogunje of HD VI.
The Lagos State Health Districts thereafter conducted free medical screening tests and distributed free drugs to participants.
