Business activities were disrupted on Wednesday at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex as traders shut down operations to protest a proposed takeover of the market’s management by state and local government authorities.

The protest forced the closure of shops across the expansive commercial hub, leaving hundreds of traders gathered around parks and garages within the complex while discussions over the proposed arrangement continued.

Traders expressed concerns that the planned management structure could introduce new levies and taxes that may negatively affect their businesses.

Many of those who spoke to journalists insisted that the complex remains a federal facility and called for broader consultations before any changes are implemented.

The shutdown affected several sections of the complex, including the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association Market, one of the largest spare parts markets in Lagos.

Some customers who had travelled long distances to the market were caught unawares by the development. One trader who came from Badagry to purchase goods expressed disappointment after arriving to find the gates locked.

According to traders, the protest began early in the morning when shop owners deliberately locked their stalls to draw attention to their concerns.

“We are not against development, but we are concerned about the possible levies and taxes that may be introduced if the management structure changes,” said a trader who identified himself as Emeka Onu.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, visited the market during the day in an effort to engage with traders and encourage the reopening of the complex.

Further consultations between the government and traders are expected as stakeholders seek a resolution that will allow normal business activities to resume.
