Heavy Rainfall Destroys Homes in Potiskum, Yobe State
A heavy downpour on Friday has destroyed several houses in Potiskum, Yobe State, leaving many residents displaced.
The torrential rain, which began late Thursday night and lasted into the early hours of Friday, triggered flooding that swept through multiple neighbourhoods.
Communities along waterways were the worst hit, with widespread structural collapses recorded in Arikime, Ramin Kasa, Tandari, Nahuta, Boriya, Rugar Fulani, and Unguwar Kuwait.
Other affected areas include Old Prison, Filin Nashe, Unguwar Makafi/Majema, Unguwar Jaji Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya Bakin Kwari, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Danjuma, and the Fudiyya axis of Potiskum.
Residents say the absence of proper drainage systems has worsened the flooding, as rainwater has no outlet, causing homes and properties to be submerged or destroyed.
Though fatalities have not been officially confirmed at the time of this report, dozens of houses have collapsed, and many families have been displaced. In one incident, a woman miraculously survived after a building caved in on her.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has deployed officials to the affected communities to assess damages and provide emergency relief.
