Tension gripped Ihiagwa and neighbouring communities in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on the night of May 13, 2026, after armed men attempted to abduct a resident along the Umuokwo Ihiagwa–Eziobodo Road.
The attempted operation, however, collapsed following a swift response by security operatives, local vigilantes, and residents.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, who arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, tried to whisk away their target under the cover of darkness but met stiff resistance from a combined team of police officers, vigilante members, and community youths who quickly mobilised to confront them.
The coordinated response forced the gunmen to flee the area, foiling what residents described as a well-planned kidnapping attempt.

Amid the exchange of gunfire, at least one person sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, while another survivor reportedly escaped narrowly from the scene.
The incident sparked panic across communities around the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), with residents expressing growing concern over the rising insecurity in the area.
Following the attack, security presence has reportedly been reinforced in the affected communities to prevent further incidents and reassure residents.
