Urhobo Community in Toronto Celebrates Culture, Unity, and Compassion at Year-End Gathering

The Urhobo community in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday, December 28, 2025, held a vibrant end-of-year celebration that brought together Urhobo sons and daughters, as well as friends of the community, to express gratitude to God for life, protection, and divine provision throughout the year.

The colourful event, which opened with the traditional breaking of kolanut, took place at the renowned Hotpot Parlash Restaurant and Lounge along the lively Edystone Avenue in North York, Toronto. The gathering served as a showcase of the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people while reinforcing the bonds of unity, harmony, and togetherness among members.

Guests enjoyed a sumptuous display of traditional Urhobo cuisine, including Owo, Banga soup with starch, Egwusi soup, Ukodo, and other locally prepared delicacies. These were accompanied by assorted drinks, including the locally distilled gin, ogogoro, creating a relaxed and convivial atmosphere for interaction and social bonding.

One of the standout moments of the celebration was a fundraising drive dedicated to supporting the homeless during the harsh winter period. The free-will donation initiative coincided with the unveiling of the union’s 2026 calendar of activities, reflecting the group’s strong commitment to humanitarian service and social responsibility.

In her address, the President of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Canada, Ms. Evelyn Akpojiyovwi, thanked members and guests for their continued support and participation. She emphasized the importance of active involvement in community affairs, reaffirming the association’s commitment to the welfare and collective advancement of its members.

Ms. Akpojiyovwi also encouraged eligible Urhobo individuals who are yet to formally register with the Urhobo Progress Union to do so, noting the strength and benefits of belonging to a united and well-organized community. She further announced the forthcoming UPU National Convention scheduled for July 2026, assuring members of a multi-day event packed with enriching and empowering activities. Attendees were urged to take advantage of early-bird discounts on hotel bookings ahead of the convention.

The event attracted several notable personalities, including Kenny Bazuaye, CEO of GBKM Canada and Vice President of the Nigeria Canadian Association; Mr. Richard Adejayan; Mr. Niyi; Mr. and Mrs. Lucky Otubu; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Boyi; Mr. and Mrs. Esievoadje; Mr. Ejovi; Mrs. Kevwe; and Lion Kingsley Ugonna Agbaegbu, among others.

The end-of-year celebration was widely hailed as a remarkable success, leaving participants with cherished memories, renewed solidarity, and a shared enthusiasm for greater collaboration and engagement as one united Urhobo family.
