LASG intensifies campaign against Gender-Based violence

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada has reiterated its commitment to eradicating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and harmful traditional practices through continuous sensitisation and community engagement.

This reaffirmation was made during a Sensitisation Programme on Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Traditional Practices held on Thursday, October 24, 2025, at Ago Egun Iwaya Yaba, Lagos, with the theme: “Combating Harmful Gender Norms and Practices in Our Communities.”

In her address, the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada who was represented by the Director, Domestic Violence Unit, Mrs. Abiola Osifowokan, emphasised the need for collective action to eliminate practices that endanger women and girls, particularly in riverine and rural areas. She noted that harmful traditional norms, gender discrimination, and violence continue to impede societal progress, stressing that education, advocacy, and enforcement of relevant laws remain vital tools in addressing these challenges.

Mrs. Dada further acknowledged the unwavering support of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, whose inclusive governance approach has prioritised women’s empowerment, protection, and participation in the State’s developmental agenda.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo represented by Deputy Director, DVU, Mrs. Fisayo Alabi appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for his inclusion drive and commended the Honourable Commissioner for her passion and steadfast dedication to the cause of women and vulnerable groups in Lagos State.

The sensitisation programme brought together stakeholders such as Olori Rebecca Temitope Oloko who brought a goodwill message from HRM, Oba Sulaiman Owolabi Ogunoloko, other leaders like Baale High Chief, Ajannaku Amusu Sunday; High Chief, Jagungbade Kunanyon Yusuf; Babaloja General, Mr. Ayanrino Hakeem of Yaba Local Council Development Area and women advocates, President, Jakin NGO, Mrs. Adebiyi Olubukola, all united in the mission to build safer, more equitable communities across the state.
