Fire Guts Section of Alaba International Market
A massive fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the Alaba International Market in Lagos, destroying several shops and causing panic among traders.
Videos circulating online showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the market as distraught traders watched helplessly. Some wept over lost goods, while others made frantic efforts to salvage their merchandise before the flames reached nearby shops.
Personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were at the scene, working to contain the blaze. However, the fire was still raging at the time of filing this report.
Eyewitnesses said the fire tore through rows of locked shops and warehouses. Some traders blamed market security for what they described as a slow initial response.
Located along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Alaba International Market is one of Nigeria’s largest commercial hubs, known for its vast trade in electronics and building materials. The cause of the fire had yet to be determined as of press time.
