Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to making the state a benchmark for climate action, youth empowerment, and sustainable urban living, especially among students.

Speaking at the Close-Out Ceremony of the Schools Plastic Collection Challenge, held at the Ministry of the Environment & Water Resources, Alausa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, stressed that the initiative demonstrates the state’s non-negotiable drive for environmental sustainability.

Youth at the Center of Climate Action

Rotimi-Akodu called for the inclusion of environmental education in school curricula, alongside support for youth-led projects, green skills, and innovations.

He explained that the plastic challenge — organised in collaboration with UNICEF under the Green Rising Initiative — mobilised more than 10,000 students from public secondary schools across Lagos. The students collected and recycled plastics, learned practical waste management skills, and contributed directly to environmental protection.

“We are seeing today that when students are given the right tools, awareness, guidance, and support, they rise to the challenge. As we leave here, let us carry forward not just a sense of accomplishment, but a bold commitment,” he said.

Global and Local Impact

The Green Rising Initiative is a global movement that equips young people with green skills, volunteering opportunities, and advocacy capacity to champion climate resilience. In Lagos, Rotimi-Akodu noted, the challenge reflects the larger ambition of building a green economy and communities that value sustainability.

The Special Adviser commended UNICEF and other stakeholders, while recognising students as the driving force of the project.

Stakeholder Support

  • Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, Permanent Secretary, highlighted how the challenge created opportunities for students to build advocacy skills while mopping up plastics in their environment.
  • Ms. Celine Lafoucriere, UNICEF Chief of Lagos Field Office, reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to ensuring children and communities thrive in a cleaner, greener environment.

At the ceremony, participating schools across the six education districts were recognised, with outstanding students receiving desktop computers with internet access and cash awards.
