Lagos State Government launches a world-class dialysis facility to expand affordable kidney care and strengthen healthcare delivery under Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda.

The Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Iyun, Surulere, has been equipped with a modern Nephrology and Dialysis Centre, designed to expand access to affordable and high-quality kidney care for Lagos residents.

Speaking in his office, the Head of Nephrology Unit, Dr. Busari Abdulwasiu Adebiyi, explained that the new centre was established by the Lagos State Government to provide affordable, technically driven nephrology care, dialysis services, and renal transplantation, in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the Sanwo-Olu administration.

Dr. Busari, who previously honed his expertise at Gbagada General Hospital, said the centre aims to become a world-class facility capable of treating at least 20,000 patients out of the estimated two million Lagosians living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), thereby reducing the pressure on tertiary hospitals such as LUTH.

He stressed that the centre would not only provide treatment but also preventive and early intervention services for high-risk groups, including hypertensive and diabetic patients, to curb complications and improve quality of life.

On challenges, Dr. Busari noted that manpower remains a major concern, as many healthcare professionals migrate abroad. He called for continuous training and retraining of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health workers to bridge the gap in specialised care.

He also highlighted the critical need for stable electricity, praising the hospital for providing standby generators and solar backup, which will be expanded as services grow.

Furthermore, he urged for greater integration of dialysis into the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) insurance scheme, to ease the financial burden on patients:

“With full incorporation of hemodialysis into the state health insurance, out-of-pocket costs will reduce, access will increase, and patient survival will improve,” he said.

Dr. Busari also encouraged NGOs and private sector partners to collaborate with the government to ensure sustainability.

Since its launch, the centre has already handled over 400 nephrology referrals and successfully completed multiple dialysis sessions for patients with both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. The hospital has also subsidised the first 100 dialysis sessions, in line with the state’s commitment to reducing healthcare costs.

He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising healthcare, and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for donating the hospital. He also appreciated the State Health Service Commission, the Medical Director, Dr. Olumide Sojinrin, and the hospital staff for their dedication.
