Lagos State Government Moves to Boost Adire Production

The Lagos State Government has expressed readiness to strengthen local textile production and promote indigenous fabrics, particularly Adire, as part of its drive to grow the creative economy and preserve cultural heritage.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, recently received the Adire Sector Chairman of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGWN), Comrade Ibrahim Adebayo Lawal, along with his executive members, at his office in Alausa, Ikeja.

The meeting centered on fostering a strategic partnership to promote Adire and other traditional fabrics, create employment opportunities for young people, and reinforce Lagos’ position as Africa’s creative and cultural hub.

During the discussions, stakeholders highlighted the Ministry’s sponsorship of delegates to the forthcoming Annual Textile Union Educational Conference in Kaduna (November 2025), as well as collaboration on the proposed Adire Carnival, which aims to celebrate and showcase indigenous textile artistry.

Mr. Aregbe assured the delegation of the Ministry’s full support, stressing the government’s unwavering commitment to empowering artisans, preserving cultural identity, and boosting Lagos’ creative economy through sustainable textile initiatives.
