Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State, in a fierce overnight battle that underscored the military’s sustained pressure on insurgent elements in the North-East.
The attack occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026, when terrorists launched an assault in an attempt to breach the defensive perimeter of the military formation.
However, according to a statement issued by Major General Michael Onoja, Director, Defence Media Operations, the troops—under the leadership of the Commander, 29 Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah—responded swiftly and decisively, engaging the attackers with superior firepower and forcing them to retreat in disarray.

The statement noted that the insurgents abandoned their mission after suffering a failed assault on the well-fortified military base.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the attempted attack reflects the growing desperation of terrorist groups that have suffered heavy losses in recent military operations and are now resorting to what it described as “futile and ill-fated offensives” against military positions.
“The swift and decisive response by troops underscores the high level of combat readiness, resilience, and operational effectiveness of Operation HADIN KAI in safeguarding critical locations and maintaining pressure on terrorist groups across the North-East theatre,” the statement said.

Sadly, the military confirmed that a number of soldiers were killed during the encounter.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, paid tribute to the fallen troops, describing them as brave and gallant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the nation.
Their heroism and unwavering commitment, the CDS said, would remain a source of pride and inspiration to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the country at large.
The military high command also extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased personnel.
Defence Headquarters appealed to the public and the media to respect established military tradition by allowing the Armed Forces to formally notify the next of kin before releasing further details about the casualties.

It also urged Nigerians to ignore misinformation, sensational reports, and unverified content circulating on social media, warning that such reports could undermine ongoing military operations and broader national security efforts.
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces said additional clearance and exploitation operations are currently underway in the general area to track down and neutralize fleeing insurgents, while also preventing them from regrouping.

The military reiterated its resolve, in collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders, to sustain momentum in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign across the North-East and other parts of the country.
Commending the courage, discipline, and steadfastness of the troops, the CDS said their sacrifices continue to ensure the safety, stability, and sovereignty of Nigeria.
He also called on members of the public to continue supporting the Armed Forces with timely and credible information that could assist ongoing operations, while urging citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.
The military said further updates would be provided as necessary.
