Nigerian Delegation Visits Troops in The Gambia, Charges Personnel on Discipline, Professionalism
A Nigerian delegation led by Major General TE Gagariga has paid an official visit to the Nigerian Contingent at Yundum Barracks in The Gambia, urging officers and soldiers to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and accountability while serving on peace support operations.
The visit took place on July 22, 2026, shortly after the delegation attended the 19th African Security Watch Conference in The Gambia. Before departing for Nigeria, the team deemed it necessary to interact with the troops serving under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).
Addressing the officers and soldiers, Major General Gagariga commended them for their dedication and commitment to duty, reminding them that they represent not only the Nigerian Armed Forces but also the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He stressed that their conduct, professionalism and relationship with the people of the host nation would significantly influence Nigeria’s image and reputation, urging them to remain disciplined, respect constituted authority and strictly comply with the Nigerian Armed Forces’ policy on the responsible use of social media.
According to a statement issued by the Public Information Officer of the Nigerian Contingent, Captain Kela Babale, the senior officer also charged military officers to be responsible, accountable and exemplary in the discharge of their duties.
He noted that soldiers naturally look up to their officers for leadership and guidance, emphasizing that officers must continually demonstrate integrity, discipline and character worthy of emulation.
In his remarks, the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel YM Abdullahi, expressed appreciation to Major General Gagariga and members of his delegation for taking time out of their busy schedule to visit the contingent.
He described the visit as timely and inspiring, thanking the delegation for its words of encouragement and professional guidance.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi assured the delegation of the contingent’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, discipline and the successful execution of its mandate under ECOMIG, while continuing to uphold the honour and prestige of the Nigerian Army and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The visit also featured a guided tour of the Nigerian Contingent Base Camp, where members of the delegation were briefed on the camp’s facilities and operational activities. It concluded with a group photograph.
