Lagos Health District III organises specialised training for environmental officers

The Lagos State Health District III, in a bid to strengthen capacity and enhance environmental health service delivery recently organised a specialised training programme for Environmental Health Officers, on water testing and sample collection as well as in-house orientation for newly recruited Environmental Health Officers, nurses and midwives.

Speaking during the training held recently at the Health District III Office in Ikoyi, the Permanent Secretary, Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, emphasised that the initiative formed part of a broader strategy to develop more resourceful, skilled, and proactive officers capable of addressing emerging environmental health challenges.

She said the session was highly informative and focused on proper waste segregation, handling as well as disposal practices in line with environmental health standards.

According to her, “I would like to admonish all our participants to remain attentive and see this training/orientation as a key opportunity to acquire knowledge that should be cascaded to colleagues at your respective duty posts”.

“To our newly recruited nurses, midwives and Environmental Health Officers, as you step into your new roles, remember that your impact goes beyond your job descriptions. You are the frontline heroes of our healthcare system. As such you should always own every task, be curious and never stop learning”, she added.

She highlighted the importance of applying the knowledge gained for the overall benefit of public health and encouraged officers to remain energetic and committed.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of Environmental Health Services of the District, Sanitarian Mary Akinola emphasised the importance of transitioning from analogue methods of practice to more digital and scientific approaches in environmental health service duties.

Also, Sanitarian Dada Festus from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources delivered a lecture titled: “Water Testing and Sample Collection”, which covered approved procedures for water sample collection, when and how to collect samples properly, among others.
