Tinubu Approves Expansion of PiCNG Mandate to Include Electric Vehicles
By Brown Chimezie,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the mandate of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include Electric Vehicles (EVs), in a move aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s clean transportation agenda.
With the new approval, the initiative will now be known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV).
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the expanded initiative will now lead and coordinate Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy, covering both gas-powered vehicles and electric vehicles across the country.
According to the statement, PiCNG & EV will continue to drive the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, CNG vehicles and equipment, as well as nationwide vehicle conversion programmes.
The initiative will also oversee the development and rollout of electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, and related investments nationwide.
The Presidency said gas remains a competitive and strategic transportation fuel for Nigeria, given the country’s abundant natural gas resources. It noted that the use of gas-powered vehicles would help reduce transportation costs, strengthen energy security, and conserve foreign exchange.
It added that the inclusion of electric vehicles would further reinforce the Federal Government’s commitment to affordable, efficient, and environmentally sustainable mobility.
President Tinubu has also directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to immediately establish a coordinated framework for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits across the country.
The President emphasized that such conversion kits must be made accessible and affordable to Nigerians.
To support this objective, the initiative is expected to collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other relevant partners to design cost-effective financing models that will make vehicle conversion more widely accessible to the public.
President Tinubu also directed the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to improve access to CNG nationwide while permanent refuelling infrastructure continues to expand.
The latest development is seen as part of the administration’s broader push to promote cleaner energy alternatives, reduce dependence on petrol, and improve the affordability of transportation for Nigerians.
