Controversy is brewing in Anambra as the Inspector General of Police (IGP)’s Monitoring Unit stormed the state on Monday to enforce the sudden withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs—a move already stirring quiet panic among political heavyweights and influential figures.

State Police PRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, announced that Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu received the team in Awka, insisting the command is merely carrying out the IGP’s directive. Orutugu stated that the Monitoring Unit was deployed to “ensure full implementation of the IGP’s directive on the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP escort and guard duties.”

Critics, however, argue that the abrupt policy could leave high-profile individuals vulnerable and may be weaponized against certain groups ahead of the political season.
