9th National Youth Games: Team Lagos Defeats Host, Delta to Clinch Gold Medal

Team Lagos emerged victorious in the female football final at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, defeating host state Delta 5–4 on penalties after a pulsating 1–1 draw in regulation time.
Played at St. Patrick’s College football pitch, the match saw Delta strike first in the second half, but the resilient Lagos girls equalised in stoppage time to force penalties. Delta missed their opening spot kick, handing Lagos the advantage, which they converted with precision to secure gold.

It was Lagos’ fifth female football title at the Games. The boys’ team also finished strong, clinching bronze with a 2–0 win over Bayelsa in the third-place playoff.
Team Lagos further expanded their medal tally on Thursday with victories in volleyball and boxing.
- In volleyball, both the boys’ and girls’ teams won their finals with identical 3–1 scorelines. The boys rallied to beat Bayelsa (21-25, 26-24, 25-13, 29-27), while the girls defeated Kaduna (25-13, 21-25, 25-7, 25-9).
- In boxing, Lagos fighters delivered a dominant outing with three gold medals and one silver. Balogun Khadijat (38kg, female), Ramon Quam (40kg, male), and Agboola Oyindamola (female category) all struck gold, while Idowu Adebayo settled for silver in the 40kg female category.
Led by Director-General Lekan Fatodu, Team Lagos celebrated their wins, reinforcing the state’s reputation for excellence in youth sports and talent development.
