Sowore Condemns Alleged Brutalisation of Female NYSC Member in Oba, Anambra
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned in strong terms the alleged brutalisation of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member by operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident, which sparked outrage after a viral video showed the corps member being manhandled, has continued to attract criticism nationwide.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Sowore described the actions of the security outfit as “barbaric and unacceptable,” insisting that such acts must not be swept under the carpet.
“I strongly condemn the brutalization of a youth corper by Governor Charles Soludo’s Agunechemba Vigilante Group in Oba, Anambra State. This barbaric act is unacceptable and must not be ignored. Even though the individuals responsible have been identified and apprehended, they must also be brought to trial immediately through an impartial judicial process,” Sowore said.
He further stressed that corps members, who dedicate their service year to nation-building, must not be subjected to humiliation, intimidation, or sexual violence.
“Our NYSC corps members are serving Nigeria; they must never be subjected to intimidation as was done to Ushie Rita, nor to humiliation or sexual violence as seen in the horrific Anambra vigilante video. Vigilante groups cannot be allowed to operate above the law or brutalize innocent citizens with impunity,” he added.
