Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has appointed Mr. Joachim Achor, a native of Abia State, as the new Accountant General of Anambra State.

The appointment, which has drawn widespread attention, deviates from the traditional practice of limiting top-tier government roles to individuals of Anambra origin. It reflects Soludo’s growing commitment to building a public service driven by merit and competence rather than ethnicity.

Mr. Achor’s relationship with Anambra began years ago when he arrived as a student at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Following his graduation, he served in the state under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), where his outstanding performance earned him the NYSC State Merit Award as the best corps member of the year. His excellence during that period led to an exceptional offer of immediate employment by the then military administration—an uncommon privilege at the time.

Since then, Mr. Achor has diligently climbed the ranks in the state civil service, serving in various capacities including Director and Permanent Secretary, before reaching his latest role as Accountant General.
