The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has explained that the recent collapse of the national grid was caused by a system disturbance triggered by the tripping of a generation company.

According to NISO, the tripping led to a significant load drop, which quickly cascaded to other power generation companies, culminating in a nationwide system disturbance.

The agency, however, assured Nigerians that restoration of the grid began immediately, with power already being supplied to Abuja from the Shiroro power plant. Substantial restoration has since been achieved across the country.

NISO further disclosed that a full investigation is underway to determine the root cause of the incident, with the findings expected to guide proactive measures to prevent future occurrences.

The latest grid collapse underscores the fragility of Nigeria’s power infrastructure and the urgency of implementing long-term solutions to stabilise electricity supply.
