LAWMA Sustains Ayobo-Ipaja Cleanup, Seals Defaulting Markets, Plazas
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sustained its intervention to clear waste backlogs and curb indiscriminate dumping across the Ayobo-Ipaja axis, with enforcement operations resulting in the sealing of some recalcitrant markets and plazas for environmental violations.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the latest enforcement operation, conducted on Sunday by the LAWMA Project WISE team covering the Ikeja West District, targeted defaulting facilities around the Ayobo-Ipaja axis following repeated environmental infractions and failure to comply with the Authority’s directives.
According to him, the facilities sealed during the operation included Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun 1 Market, Ayobo Market and Oba Plaza, all within the Ayobo area.
He explained that the enforcement operation complemented LAWMA’s ongoing waste evacuation and environmental sanitation intervention across the axis, where operational teams had continued to clear accumulated waste from Oluwaga Bus Stop by Sawmill, Ayobo Road median by Rainoil, Atan Nla by TCN, Ayobo Police Post, Megida Bus Stop and other identified locations.
Gbadegesin said the Authority would continue to combine waste evacuation with sustained monitoring and enforcement to ensure that cleared locations do not relapse into waste black spots.
He stressed that achieving lasting environmental improvement required the cooperation of residents, traders, businesses and other waste generators through compliance with approved waste disposal arrangements.
The LAWMA boss reiterated that the Authority would continue to take necessary enforcement measures against individuals, markets, plazas and other facilities that violate environmental regulations or contribute to indiscriminate waste dumping.
He urged residents and businesses within the axis to support the ongoing intervention by patronising their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, disposing of waste through approved channels and refraining from activities capable of undermining efforts to restore and maintain environmental cleanliness.
