FG Removes Mathematics as Required Admission Subject for Arts Students
Applicants for programmes such as Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Languages can now qualify without Mathematics, though English and other relevant art subjects remain mandatory. Mathematics will, however, remain compulsory for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses.
A statement by the Federal Ministry of Education noted that the decision aims to expand access and support students whose strengths lie in the arts, promoting inclusivity and creativity within the nation’s education system.
The reform is projected to create up to 300,000 additional admission slots annually, reduce the number of out-of-school youths, and strengthen vocational and technical education across Nigeria.
JAMB and NUC are expected to update admission guidelines accordingly, while schools and counsellors will adjust subject advice to align with the new policy.
